“And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger? For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and he pondered all his goings. His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins, he shall die without instruction: and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray”. (Prov. 5:20-23).
The Bible is asking why would you be ravished with a strange woman? (Stranger to God’s covenant is somebody who does not know God). Why would you embrace the bosom of a stranger? Why would you lust after a strange woman that is not your wife? If it resulted in an actual sin with her, then it is not only that you went into the woman sexually, and came out, but also that there is a cord that bind you to the woman. The Bible says that anyone who goes in to a harlot becomes one spirit with the harlot, (1Cor. 6:16); a spiritual cord is established. When you stopped, your sin did not stop with the action. It went on to bind you. There are cords that bind you to every sin.
The Bible is asking why should you embrace a strange woman? To embrace a strange woman is to give affection and attention reserved for marital relationship to a woman you are not married to. Her lustful cord will take hold of you and you will die, says the Bible, without instruction (God’s leading and direction) and in the greatness (at the pinnacle of your achievement) of your folly you will go astray from God.
